I’ve heard of massage and I’ve heard of sports, but what is sports massage?

Sports massage is a tailored form of massage focussed on strengthening and recovering the soft tissue in your body.

Initially developed for athletes in the early 20th century as a way of preventing and relieving muscle injuries, sports massage is now used by a huge variety of people to improve pain caused by strain, injury and physical trauma.

With a focus on speeding up the body’s recovery time from exercise and injury, sports massage is very distinct from other forms of massage. The movements are designed to correct imbalances in the soft tissue - and you can feel the healing effects immediately!

About soft tissue

Why should I worry about my soft tissue?

The soft tissue in your body includes your muscles, tendons, ligaments and connecting tissue called ‘fascia’. This tissue is prone to tension, overstrain and trauma, especially from repetitive physical activity.

‘Tennis elbow’ is a notorious example of an injury to the soft tissue - this is where the muscles on the back of the forearm become overloaded. Sports massage can identify and treat imbalances and prevent issues developing in the soft tissue before they become a major problem.

For all levels

But I’m not a professional sports player…

You don’t have to be Harry Kane or Naomi Osaka to benefit from sports massage. If you play sports at any level, sports massage can make sure you are able to keep playing at the top of your game and avoid any long-term injuries, including strains, aches and/or chronic pain.

Even if you just cycle or walk a lot - or even do a physically demanding job - sports massage can keep you feeling healthy, fit and full of life. It can also do wonders for your blood circulation, breathing, quality of sleep and your digestion!

Massages are often considered a luxury but if you regularly play sport or have a strenuous lifestyle or job, sports massage is an essential part of living a sustainable and injury-free life!
